The first Bulgarian primer for students whose mother tongue is different from Bulgarian is available for free on the website https://prepodavame.bg/ , and teachers can use it during the new school year as additional material for acquiring reading skills.
The primer “Reading with Asya and Yavor” is suitable for Bulgarian children abroad who have limited contact with the Bulgarian language, students in the early grades who, for various reasons, have difficulties with reading in primary school up to grades 2–3, and all children who want to learn to read.
“Reading with Asya and Yavor” includes three separate books: a primer for children; a primer with work guidelines for teachers; and “My Letters” – an appendix for making tactile letters. The primer with work guidelines contains all the pages from the children’s primer, as well as a story framework and instructions for working with each letter. This allows individual work with one child using only this book. The “My Letters” appendix gives children the opportunity to track their progress themselves and to create their own individual alphabet using various materials.
The primer was created with a special focus on children who need additional support in acquiring reading skills. The materials in the set take into account the main difficulties children face when learning to read. The primer has been piloted by teachers in the early grades and the practice of a speech therapist specialist.
